10 Tips for Saving Money as a Homeowner
Owning a home can be expensive, but there are ways you can save money and make the most of your investment.
As your neighborhood handyman, I wanted to provide 10 tips to help you reduce costs and add value to your home.
1. Check for rebates and incentives when replacing appliances or systems. There are often great rebates for purchasing ENERGY STAR certified appliances or upgrading to a high-efficiency furnace or AC unit.
2. Improve insulation and sealing air leaks. Adding insulation in the attic and re-caulking and weather-stripping doors and windows can really cut down on heating and cooling costs.
3. Install a smart or programmable thermostat. This makes it easy to set back the temperature at night and when no one is home to save on energy bills.
4. Do routine maintenance on HVAC systems. Changing filters and getting annual check-ups improves efficiency and can prevent costly repairs down the road.
5. Invest in CFL or LED light bulbs. They use up to 75% less energy than traditional incandescent bulbs and last much longer too.
6. Plant trees and shrubs strategically around your home for shade and windbreaks. This can cut down on heating/cooling costs.
7. Monitor utility bills and usage. Knowing what you typically spend helps you quickly identify inefficiencies or costly leaks.
8. Learn basic DIY home repairs. Simple tasks like caulking cracks, fixing drips or weatherizing windows can protect your most valuable investment.
9. Clean out gutters and ensure proper drainage to prevent water damage. Catch issues early!
10. Consider energy audit recommendations. Audits can uncover hidden savings opportunities tailored to your specific home.
I hope these DIY tips help you save money and get the most enjoyment out of your home.
